Born in Lowestoft on the east coast of England, I started playing at the age of ten and played initially in local bands playing the trumpet and cornet. I played my first professional engagement, a show at the age of thirteen.
As a soloist, I have recorded many works, including the Recital Gems for Trumpet and Piano. Recital Gems and Concert Classics and Fellowship of Brass and has led sections in studios across the world, recording music scores for such projects as diverse as, “The Bible” and Miss World.
I have also worked with the music producer Bruce Cassidy, formerly of Blood Sweat and Tears, working in what was then one of the most advanced recording studios in the world as a multi-instrumentalist playing the trumpet and horn as well as arranger and producer.
Trained as a classical player, my early playing sparked an enduring interest in light music, jazz and Renaissance music. I was a member of the Venetian Brass Ensemble at the age of seventeen and of the London Festival Brass Ensemble which included many of the young leading players of the day when a student.
Whilst studying with Edgar Riches AND Phil Parker Snrin London, I was spotted as a young talent by the late Philip Jones C.B.E. who kindly gave John lessons free of charge and greatly influenced me as a musician and a brass player and I won an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music.
I have played in a wide range of professional groups in Europe, Japan, Africa and of course the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands, including the Gerry Bosman Pops Orchestra, the SABC Symphony Orchestra, the National Chamber Orchestra and jazz and recording orchestras for films and television.
My pupils have consistently gained places at major music conservatories and universities and have had success in competitions such as BBC Young Musician of the Year.
I am now in demand as a clinician and tutor in addition to my work as a trumpet player, choir conductor, orchestra and band trainer, composer, soloist, and recitalist.
I studied composition with William Lloyd Webber, conducting with Norman Del Mar, and the trumpet with Philip Jones CBE, Richard Walton, and David Mason.
